Milledgeville, Georgia

Milledgeville Georgia is a city known for its “Capitals, Columns and Culture” and served as Georgia’s Antebellum Capital. The city’s unique streets are parallel with the point of the compass making it the only surviving Federal-period city. Milledgeville holds on to its history, but is paving the way to future.

Milledgeville and Baldwin County received $862,000 of $5 million that Georgia’s governor allocated for rural broadband development. The funding, in the form of a matching grant, is earmarked for the construction of a broadband wireless network. This year WiMax data services will be added to current broadband services giving this small, engaged community the opportunity to accelerate local programs and meet civic goals.

The city, along with community stakeholders, is working to include deploying a mobile dispatch system to increase the productivity and responsiveness of fire and police personnel and Parent University, a school bus fitted with a dozen internet-enabled PCs that travels the county offering training to parents so that they can better support their children’s education. Future plans include technology training for small businesses, community and parent outreach centers, and new web and video services that showcase Milledgeville to potential relocating businesses and residents.

Currently, Milledgeville is working with WiMAX network builder Clearwire Corporation to establish a cellular-type network that would meet a number of the community’s goals. The Knight Center of Digital Excellence is working with community leaders to develop broadband solutions and bridge the digital divide for Milledgeville.
